Synopsis

My Thoughts
The story is told in the form of a narrative from the main character Even as he gives evidence from the witness box during a trial. What we don’t know however, is who’s trial is it? Is Even on trial himself? I love books that feature an unreliable narrator and the whole way through this book I was just never entirely sure whether I trusted Even’s account. Is he lying to us? Well you’ll have to read and find out!
This is one of those classic crime books where everyone at some point is a suspect. I hugely enjoyed reading along and trying to piece together the clues to see if I could work out who had killed Even’s friends and why. The motive for why these killings took place was probably the most frustrating part as I just couldn’t for the life of me work out why anyone would wish these teenagers harm.
Towards the end when everything starts to come together there’s twist upon twist. Just when I finally thought I knew who did it and why the author threw another twist in the mix and turned everything on it’s head.
I was completely racing through the pages towards the end and this for me is one of those books that if time permitted I could very easily have sat and read it in one sitting. I would thoroughly recommend this book and I enjoyed it immensely.
About the Author
Thomas Enger is a former journalist. He made his debut with the crime novel
Burned in 2010, which became an international sensation before publication, and marked the first in the bestselling Henning Juul series. Rights to the series have been sold to 28 countries to date. In 2013 Enger published his first book for young adults, a dark fantasy thriller called The Evil Legacy, for which he won the U-prize (best book Young Adult). Killer Instinct, upon which Inborn is based, and another Young Adult suspense novel, was published in Norway in 2017 and won the same prestigious prize. Most recently, Thomas has co- written a thriller with Jørn Lier Horst. Enger also composes music, and he lives in Oslo.
