Dangerous is one thing. Deadly is something else. When Clodagh Shepherd’s curiosity gives way to obsession, her thoughts turn to revenge. In the wake of her husband’s affair and subsequent disappearance, Clo makes an impulsive decision to befriend the beautiful stranger who has stolen her life. Answering an ad for a home help, she moves into the home of her husband’s mistress and is immediately drawn into the chilling reality behind the idyllic façade of Hamptons life. Central to her terrifying nightmare is a deadly secret–a secret someone will kill to keep. In this dark and twisting thriller, Clo proves the adage ‘hell hath no fury like a woman scorned’ with shocking consequences.

My Thoughts

I have read a few psychological thrillers that feature around a woman finding out her husband is cheating on her and what subsequently happens afterwards. What’s interesting about this story however, is that it starts with Clo already aware of her husband’s extra marital activities right from the beginning and she seemingly already has a plan in place with how she’s going to deal with it. What we as the reader don’t know is what the details of this plan actually entail.

Although the scorned wife is usually the character that you most sympathise with in these kind of stories, Clo is a different kettle of fish altogether. I found it really difficult whilst reading to like her, which wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. She came across in my opinion as the villain and I knew I shouldn’t like her, but at the same time I was really enjoying reading her downward spiral and I was riveted wanting to know just how far she was willing to take things.

There were some sections for me that seemed a bit far fetched and I did find myself thinking ‘really??’, but, at the same time the absolute absurdity of the whole situation did make for a very entertaining read. If anything, the ludicrous moments actually added to the tension because I had no idea where things were going or what Clo was capable of so it definitely kept me guessing!

Overall a good read for any psychological thriller fans who like to read about a character you can love to hate together with an unpredictable storyline.
