Synopsis

One crossed wire, three dead bodies and six bottles of bleach.

Seth Beauman can’t sleep. He stays up late, calling strangers from his phonebook, hoping to make a connection, while his wife, Maeve, sleeps upstairs. A crossed wire finds a suicidal Hadley Serf on the phone to Seth, thinking she is talking to The Samaritans.

But a seemingly harmless, late-night hobby turns into something more for Seth and for Hadley, and soon their late-night talks are turning into day-time meet-ups. And then this dysfunctional love story turns into something altogether darker, when Seth brings Hadley home… And someone is watching…

Dark, sexy, dangerous and wildly readable, Good Samaritans marks the scorching return of one of crime fiction’s most exceptional voices. Terrifying and tantalisingly twisted novel by one of the most exciting authors in the genre.

My Thoughts

In the opening pages of this book there is a quote from the popular film Fight Club. Now this being one of my all time favourite films I straight away had a sneaky suspicion that this book was going to be a bit of me.

The book mainly focuses on Seth and Maeve, a married couple, and Ant, who volunteers answering the phones for The Samaritans. It’s told in the form of a narrative with each character telling the story, not necessarily to us as the readers, but more like they are giving a run through of their thoughts in their heads and we as the readers are voyeurs into their deepest, darkest, most sordid of thoughts.

These three characters are very unique indeed, they are each so deeply disturbed and the way the author describes their thoughts is very refreshing as some boundaries are pushed! I got the sense that this book was told with an ‘i’m not holding back’ kind of attitude.

I read books because I want to be shocked, I want to be taken to places and step into situations that I personally wouldn’t go. This book took me to such places! It’s an unnerving thought to think that there might be characters like Seth, Maeve and Ant walking and living among us ordinary folk.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I started reading this book. I had seen all the hype and a lot of people who had read it had recommended it and I can see why now. About a third of the way through, the book all of a sudden seemed to burst into life and I sat up straighter in my seat and thought ‘well this just went somewhere I wasn’t expecting’. The rest of the book then carried on in this manner with a shock ending which left me itching to know if there would be any kind of follow up. Will Carver – I think there’s room here to bring a certain devious character back for round two at some point!

I really enjoyed this book, if you like your reads a bit dark, a lot twisted, and you have a slightly, shall we say, unconventional sense of humour, then this book will definitely be for you. Another blinder of a read from Orenda Books right here.
